Again the photo is killing the definition, the flesh and the hair colors are of too similar hue, they kinda blend together. The background is too similar also. I like the cropped photo more, I should chop the excess off.

Usually I have some idea on what monster I draw is or who they are, that is not what is going on here. I have some trouble with the background shape too. I like the shape of the piece overall. I dont really like the shading on the shoulder on the left, I should have just shaded the whole shoulder. The shading in general should have been less detailed, more basic in shape definition.

the balance of the footing is off too, now I am just nit picking. Sorry axe monster.

Hi, as of late i have really begun to think about economy of line in my art. i have spent a lot of time in my life chasing the idea of realism as a goal for my art, and i think this is a common goal for artists. i have spent a significant amount of effort and time following this path, and as of now i think its a trap. with realism a loss of interpretation, or empathy occurs. i like to equate this with the simple drawing of charlie brown. if he was illustrated to be a realistic human image, he would be rather disturbing. but as a simple completely humanistic line drawing we the viewer begin to empathize with the crummy lines. its in those imperfect lines that we see the human hand that made them, the emotion of time or experience. in our constant attempt to identify ourselves in everything around us, more simple symbols become easier to assimilate. the majority of us have two eyes and a mouth and with this shared commonality we connect. in the book understanding comics, the author talks about the way most humans see an electrical outlet and instantly try to create a human face out of it, with the two upper prong holes as eyes and the lower as a mouth. the same can be said for the "face" of cars. as we head more into the realistic rendering or representation in art we become more and more specific to the chosen subject and remove the possibilities of alterity.

digital painting?

Hi all,
I am trying my hand at digital painting again, and I don't know if its worth devoting anymore time to than say, traditional drawing or even painting for that matter. The inspiration just grabbed me and took me away from other pressing projects. I am not a painter, I am more proficient at drawing than painting. So I am unaware of the intricate differences in digital and traditional, but that is for others to discuss. I am just in debate to whether pursue proficient skill in this media or not, in all likelihood I will. This is just the nature of my curiosity, and in doing so I will just mesh it other media techniques. The topmost image is my favorite version, its the only one I remembered to crop, but I also like the balance of line and color. This balance of not entirely relying on line to save me was difficult. Due to my preference of drawing to painting.

This one has more color to it, or thicker paint, its my second favorite. The goblin seems more tangible, more real. But if I pursued this approach further, I would want to blend more colors, Have a decided palette, which I am unaware of how to do yet digitally.

This is just a kinda neat filter effect that I liked.

This version is minus the gold glow of greed. I like the subtle muted colors.

This one has less of a defined edge or line, it looks more like an underpainting.

These last two look more like charcoal or conte drawings, so I like them.

Okay, that's it.
So what do you think of this nonsense.

earlier today i read a nate powell comic about how sleep is an enemy. could this be true, is my oldest ally now my enemy? i dunno. but it is four and i am productive, take that rem sleep. i have music on really low, i have my window open listening to the sounds of the city night. only a dim desk lamp illuminates my drawing table, tomorrow i will be tired, but the night is for poets & madmen.

I drew this last night and colored it today, I am still unfinished with it. There is something missing from the overall asthetic of it. Some kind of old newsprint dinge to the color. I am usually disappointed with the color half tone, ben day dot look, it still doesn't match the actual charm of golden age printing. Maybe if I saw it actually printed on newsprint. Why is newspaper so fantastic, it must be the charm of it's low quality. It's fantastic to draw on too.

There never seems to be enough time.
I would draw all day, everyday if I could.
Or sometimes I think I would, but in the time I have to draw, I usually get distracted or lost in a haze of indecisiveness or restlessness. Too anxious to create, than I get tongue tied or jittering, trying to force the natural. It all ends up a logjam.
Tonight I went looking for trouble and I found it, I went looking on the 'net at great artists and got discouraged, they are soooo good! I will not name names. But there are some really talented people out there, genius abound! good for them. Hopefully someday I will ruin some artist's night.
lesson learned: If you go looking for trouble, you will find it.
